Hades FAQ

Last Updated March July 16, 2025: Here are answers to frequently asked questions about our fourth game, Hades!

What is Hades?

Hades is a rogue-like dungeon crawler in which you defy the god of the dead as you hack and slash your way out of the Underworld of Greek myth. We think it combines the best aspects of our previous games, including the fast-paced action of Bastion, the rich atmosphere and depth of Transistor, and the character-driven storytelling of Pyre.

It’s never the same experience twice: Each time you play, you'll combine the divine might of various Olympian gods with your own in new ways, brave a wide variety of different challenges, and unravel more of the story featuring our award-winning art, audio, and narrative. You may play for not just dozens of hours, but hundreds of hours, while still discovering new character builds and story events.

Hades is our fastest-selling, most critically acclaimed game to date. It was named 2020's Game of the Year by more than 50 publications, including IGN, Polygon, TIME Magazine, and The Washington Post.

I ran into a technical issue with the game. What should I do?

We’ve done our best to launch Hades in a high-quality, problem-free state. However, you may run into problems we didn’t find. If you experienced any problems running the game and need technical support, visit our Knowledge Base, or have a look in #hades-tech-fixes in our official Discord server, which should help get you sorted.

What is a rogue-like (or rogue-lite), anyway...?

The rogue-like is a cousin of the action RPG genre that put us on the map with our best-selling titles, Bastion and Transistor. Rogue-likes are combat-oriented games where you get stronger as you fight, (almost) inevitably dying at some point, then carrying that knowledge forward into your next randomized run. What's so enthralling about them is how they can be completely different from one run to the next!

While Hades is very much an action game, rogue-likes traditionally are turn-based, strategic games -- so, the term 'rogue-lite' is also sometimes used to describe games that take influence from the genre without strictly adhering to the original format. We love the sense of challenge, player expression, and replayability inherent to such games. With Hades, we wanted to create our own take on this style, with a real sense of place and story to it, much like how we infused a sense of narrative purpose into the action RPG with Bastion, way back when. See it in action here:

Some rogue-likes are brutally difficult... is Hades?

Don't worry! Rogue-like games can be known for their steep difficulty, and indeed, Hades can present a considerable challenge. However, one of our foremost design goals on the project was to open up the thrills of rogue-like games to more players. To that end, and knowing that challenge is relative from player to player, the game offers a wide range of difficulty modifiers as well as permanent progression systems... alongside plenty of characters to interact with when you're not trying to battle out of hell. A feature called God Mode is always available to make you more resilient to damage (and a little tougher still each time you die). We also have Hell Mode for the ultimate challenge, and a late-game system called the Pact of Punishment, which makes things really interesting.... Overall, you'll be able to play Hades your way.

Now that Hades has launched, what's next?

We've always wanted to stick together as a small team and keep making games for as long as we can, one big project at a time! We're excited to figure out what's next and to share whatever that is once we think we're far enough along.

Who are you folks, again...?

We’re Supergiant Games! We're a small independent studio in San Francisco, founded in 2009 and best known for our critically acclaimed games Bastion, Transistor, Pyre, and now Hades.

All seven of our original staff are still working together here in their respective roles, now bolstered by more than twice as many talented individuals who complete our team. Our ambition has remained the same through the years: to make games that spark your imagination like the games you played as a kid.

I heard Hades was an Early Access game. What is Early Access? Is it over?

Hades did launch as an Early Access game, originally in December 2018. In September 2020, we officially completed our Early Access development and launched v1.0 of the game.

Early Access meant you could play Hades while it was still in active development.

We designed Hades as an Early Access game from the ground up. Our foremost goal was to see if we could create something great in partnership with our community -- a game that was true to our values about design, worldbuilding, and storytelling, and could naturally evolve based on the feedback we'd get along the way. Every aspect of the game, from its modular structure to its approach to narrative, flowed from this idea.

How long was Hades in development?

We got to work on Hades less than a month after our previous game, Pyre, launched on July 25, 2017. Each time we’ve completed a project, we’ve found ourselves eager to dive into something new. This time around, we wanted to make something that combined aspects of all the best ideas we’d picked up over the course of working on our three previous games, as well as delve into Early Access development for the first time. All told, Hades took a little over three years for us to get to v1.0.

Your past games have had wholly original settings. Why the change?

Hades is our first game adapted from an existing mythology -- the world of Greek myth. We felt we had a unique perspective on this theme, and saw the adaptation process as a new and exciting creative opportunity to explore. Our take on Greek mythology assumes no prior knowledge of or interest in the subject. Yet, those familiar with Greek myth should find our take on it to be true to the spirit of the source material, from Homer to Hesiod. Greek myth comes from stories of ancient gods and heroes filtered through new points of view; we’re excited to share ours.

Your games are known for characters and story. How did that fit with Early Access development?

The opportunity to deliver story in a serial fashion during Early Access was one of the many reasons we were excited to go this route with Hades. In the full game, you can look forward to meeting 30 different fully voiced characters, and experiencing the story through thousands of unique events and interactions.

You can engage with the narrative as much as you like, so if you just want to dive in for a quick hack-and-slash session, Hades has you covered. We're eager for you to experience our unique approach to storytelling in this format, where you'll inhabit a living world with characters you'll really get to know, and who remember you time after time.

Why was Hades initially available only via the Epic Games store?

Hades first launched on December 6, 2018 on the Epic Games Store. We had never launched a game into Early Access before, and our players had come to expect complete, self-contained games from us ever since Bastion’s debut in 2011. With Hades, we knew we really wanted to create a game we could develop in partnership with the community, and from talking to the folks at Epic, we realized their store would be the perfect place to conduct our experiment.

Is Hades a multiplayer game, or are there any plans for multiplayer?

Hades is a single-player game. We have no plans to add multiplayer, as we created the gameplay and narrative of Hades with a solo experience in mind.

Does Hades include DRM of any kind?

No. The computer versions of Hades are DRM-free.

Experience Red's journey like never before with Transistor for Nintendo Switch!

Get it now on the Nintendo eShop! ($19.99)

Our sci-fi themed action RPG invites you to wield an extraordinary weapon of unknown origin as you fight through a stunning futuristic city. Our studio's second game is a critical and commercial hit that's earned more than 100 awards and accolades. We've faithfully adapted and optimized it for Nintendo Switch, taking advantage of HD rumble and the system's unique design.

Transistor first debuted in 2014, several years after the successful launch of our first game, Bastion (also on Switch). With it, we really wanted to prove to ourselves and our players that we could create a whole new universe with a unique sense of style and play, and looking back we couldn't be happier with the response it got. To everyone for whom Transistor struck a chord, thank you so much!

If you've played Transistor, then you know an awful lot of fuss can happen over a certain extraordinary, talkative, neon-lit weapon of mysterious origin. Well, you don't have to be the Camerata to get your hands on it anymore, because we're GIVING AWAY this absolutely stunning, life-sized, lit-up, talking version of the Transistor itself, crafted to perfection by the masters at Volpin Props.

HOW TO ENTER: All you have to do is subscribe to the Supergiant Blast, our free monthly email newsletter where we give you the inside scoop about what we're up to. Just like with our recent Cael Hammer Giveaway, if you're already a subscriber, you're all set! We'll select the lucky winner after November 12, 2018.

PRIZES: The grand-prize winner will receive the Transistor itself. Ten winners will receive a copy of the Transistor Original Soundtrack (Vinyl), signed by composer Darren Korb and vocalist Ashley Barrett. Twenty additional winners will receive download codes for Transistor for Nintendo Switch.

WATCH: Want to see all that goes into a real-life, light-up, talking Transistor?

Pretty close match, isn't it?

Here's a quick Q&A about the giveaway:

Q: You're really giving away the Transistor?! How do I sign up?
A: We are, indeed! To have a chance to win, just make sure you've subscribed to our Supergiant Blast newsletter by November 12, 2018. We'll announce the lucky winner in a subsequent installment!

Q: So I can just subscribe to the Blast for the contest, then unsubscribe after?
A: Sure! The Supergiant Blast is meant for you. If you don't like it, unsubscribe; we'd appreciate any other feedback.

Q: Hypothetically speaking, were I to win, could I... build bridges or absorb souls and stuff?
A: This is a life-size replica designed for display, not for tampering with the fabric of reality. It does, however, light up and it says a bunch of things. We want to make absolutely sure it finds a warm and loving home.

Q: Are there any restrictions on who can enter?
A: There are. This giveaway is open to U.S. residents only. As each country tends to have its own unique laws and regulations around these types of giveaways, and delivery of prizes with monetary value, this restriction was the only way we could make this giveaway happen from a legal standpoint. Our alternative was not to do it at all. We appreciate your understanding in this.

Q: It's sort of weird but I just love reading legal text, so, you wouldn't happen to have a bunch of it pertaining to this particular giveaway like you did with the hammer one, do you?
A: Absolutely, glad you asked!

We’re seeking a talented artist to work with us on a temporary basis to create marketing art materials. The ideal candidate is a proficient graphic designer with video editing experience and good instincts for how to present our games in different contexts, such as digital storefronts and social media. This is a part-time position that could work remotely or on-site at our San Francisco studio. The contract period is four months minimum with the possibility of renewal.
Turns out, the more games you make, the more marketing art you need!

Job Responsibilities:

  • Compose high-quality marketing art consistent with the look and feel of Supergiant, often using pre-existing assets and under tight deadlines.
  • Create digital store art based on requirements and best practices of the respective platforms.
  • Update / re-author game trailers for digital storefronts and social media.

About the Candidate:

  • Proficiency with After Effects, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • Experience using video software such as Premiere or Final Cut.
  • Experience creating animated .GIF/MP4 loops a plus.
  • Organized, efficient, and able to work autonomously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Good at taking or asking for direction.
  • Graphic Design/UX background a plus.

We offer a competitive hourly rate, flexibility in your work hours, option to work remotely, and the opportunity to work as part of a tight-knit, creative team. To apply, please send an email to jobs@supergiantgames.com with the subject line "Marketing Artist". Include a link to your portfolio as the first line, and your resume in the body of the email (no attachments please).

Please be aware that a paid art test may be requested as part of the evaluation process for the position. We will be accepting applications for this position until October 26, and will follow up with prospective candidates by early November.

We were so excited to let you know Bastion is just a download away for your Nintendo Switch, we made this handy image!

Get it now on the Nintendo eShop! ($14.99)

Bastion
is our original action RPG set in a lush imaginative world, in which players must create and fight for civilization’s last refuge as a mysterious narrator marks their every move. To date, it's sold millions of copies worldwide and earned more than 100 industry accolades. We faithfully adapted and optimized this latest version for Nintendo's wonderful gaming console, so it's perfect for your living room or for playing on the go.

The first version of the game launched waaay back in 2011, when we were still working from the living room of a house! It's been a real treat for us to revisit the world and rediscover the secrets of the Calamity after all this time, and we hope you feel much the same. And, thank you! Your support over the years has made everything possible for us.

We're thrilled to announce that, by popular demand (and there has been a lot), Bastion and Transistor are coming soon to the Switch! Each title has been faithfully adapted and optimized for Nintendo's latest game console, and will soon be available on the Nintendo eShop.

Play them at PAX! PAX West takes place Aug. 31 - Sep. 3 in Seattle. If you're there, visit us at booth 1520 to try both titles before they launch on the Nintendo eShop! We'll also have new Bastion and Transistor merchandise.

About Bastion

Our debut game is an original action RPG set in a lush imaginative world, in which players must create and fight for civilization’s last refuge as a mysterious narrator marks their every move. To date, it's sold millions of copies worldwide and earned more than 100 industry awards and accolades.

Bastion arrives on the Nintendo eShop on September 13, 2018 for $14.99.

About Transistor

Our second title is a sci-fi themed action RPG that invites you to wield an extraordinary weapon of unknown origin as you fight through a stunning futuristic city. Transistor likewise was a critical and commercial hit, also earning more than 100 awards and accolades!

Transistor arrives on the Nintendo eShop on November 1, 2018 for $19.99.

Bastion and Transistor for the Switch mark the first time our games will be available on a Nintendo platform. Several of us from our small team grew up playing classic Nintendo game systems, dating all the way back to the Nintendo Entertainment System in the '80s, so it feels good to have finally had a chance to bring our games to Nintendo's latest and in many ways greatest console. We're grateful to our long-time collaborators at BlitWorks and Confetti for their efforts bringing over Bastion and Transistor, respectively.

* * *

P.S.: With Bastion and Transistor coming to the Switch, you might be wondering, what about our third and latest game, Pyre? The thing is, our games are built on our own custom tech so it's not a small undertaking for us to bring them to new platforms. So, while we haven't ruled anything out for the future, currently we don't have plans to bring Pyre to other platforms. We appreciate the interest, and are looking forward to seeing the response to Bastion and Transistor on the Switch!

Well this one sure took us long enough, seeing as Bastion just celebrated its seventh birthday on July 20! But, from the better-late-than-never department, we're pleased to announce this beautiful new boxed edition of our very first game! Pre-order today for the PlayStation 4 or PS Vita.

This isn't the final packaging but it should be pretty close!

We're grateful to the folks at Limited Run Games for collaborating with us on this latest version. The game itself is identical to what's available for download on the respective platforms -- it's the recipient of more than 100 industry awards, and to date it's sold more than 4 million copies worldwide. And now, you can have it in a physical box for posterity, complete with a brand-new, jam-packed, full-color instruction booklet we created exclusively for this release.

Here's an excerpt from the all-new instruction manual for Bastion.

We're connoisseurs of classic game instruction manuals here at Supergiant, so it was a real pleasure to get to design one in the spirit of the booklets we grew up reading cover-to-cover.

To those who've been asking us for a physical edition of Bastion over the years, thank you for all your interest and support, and we hope you love the result! And, happy seventh birthday to our first game!!
